The BSS is the area of coverage of a Wi-Fi wireless access point. An ESS comprises two or more BSS, connected via a Distribution System (DS).
AP “Root mode” is used when an AP connects to a wired network.
When in Root mode, access points connected to the same wired network* can communicate with each other, to locate other wireless clients (in another AP's BSS) and allow the forwarding of frames data frames between BSS.
In this configuration, the access points may also support client roaming between BSS, thereby creating an Extended Service Set (ESS).
